Ange Postecoglou Praises Dominic Solanke’s “Unbelievable” Performance in Spurs’ 4-1 Victory Over Aston Villa
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou lauded Dominic Solanke’s “unbelievable” display after the forward netted a stunning double in the second half, leading Spurs to a commanding 4-1 win over Aston Villa.
Aston Villa entered the match with a five-point lead over Tottenham and took the initiative when Morgan Rogers scored from a corner in the 32nd minute, interrupting Spurs’ momentum from their recent Carabao Cup win against Manchester City.
However, Tottenham bounced back in the second half, starting with captain Son Heung-min assisting Brennan Johnson for his seventh goal of the season shortly after the break. Solanke then ended a six-game goal drought with two quick goals in the last 15 minutes, while James Maddison capped off the victory with a free-kick in injury time, lifting Spurs to seventh place.
Postecoglou reserved special praise for Solanke, highlighting his tireless effort: “The enormous effort he put in on Wednesday to help us win—both physically and mentally—was remarkable. To follow that up today against a tough opponent is just unbelievable.”

Despite the win, Spurs faced injury setbacks, with Cristian Romero and Richarlison needing to be substituted. Micky van de Ven had already been sidelined with a hamstring issue earlier in the week. Romero left the pitch in the 61st minute with a right foot injury, while Richarlison appeared to pull a muscle while assisting Solanke’s goal in the 79th minute.
“Richy felt something in his hamstring while setting up the goal, so we’ll see,” Postecoglou commented. “I don’t have further updates on Romero, but he’s tough, so it must be serious for him to come off.”
Postecoglou also opted to substitute Son in the 56th minute, a decision that seemed to frustrate the captain. However, the manager clarified that this was part of the plan, as Son had missed six of the previous seven matches due to a hamstring issue.
“He had an injury and was only going to play 45 to 60 minutes regardless of how the game was going,” Postecoglou explained. “The good thing is he made a crucial contribution with an excellent assist for our first goal.”
Aston Villa’s recent form suffered another blow with consecutive defeats, including a loss to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. Nonetheless, Unai Emery praised his team’s competitive spirit: “We competed and were consistent. The first half was much better than the second, and the team knows how we can be competitive and close to winning.”
He accepted the match’s outcome, acknowledging their mistakes: “We accept the result because in the second half, when they scored two goals, we made some errors against a very good team in transition.”
