Former goalkeeper Joe Hart believes Jordan Pickford should not be held responsible for Southampton’s late winner against Everton.
The Toffees lost 1-0 at St Mary’s on Saturday, ending their five-match unbeaten streak. Everton created opportunities, including a shot from substitute Beto that hit the crossbar, but Southampton capitalized almost immediately, with Adam Armstrong scoring during a counter-attack to secure their first Premier League win of the season. Everton later had a potential equalizer from Beto disallowed for offside following a VAR review.
Armstrong’s shot did not go into the far corner, leading to some criticism of Pickford’s positioning. However, Hart, a former Manchester City and England goalkeeper, argues that Everton defender Vitalii Mykolenko’s positioning obstructed Pickford’s view. On Match of the Day, Hart explained: “The shot went into the middle of the goal, but the confusion from the Everton chance left Mykolenko lost in the center of the defense, inadvertently blocking Pickford’s line of sight.
“As Pickford tries to move to face Armstrong’s shot, if Mykolenko hadn’t been there, he could have shifted another yard to his right, improving his chances to make a save.
“Mykolenko was out of position, chasing Cameron Archer. When he realized he didn’t need to follow him, he turned his back and spun around.
“Pickford’s weight was on his left foot, forcing him to look around. He was hoping Armstrong would pass back towards James Tarkowski. Once the ball went past Mykolenko’s hip, Pickford had almost no time to react, which is why it ended up in the net.”
