The Hammers parted ways with David Moyes over the summer after he faced heavy criticism for his style of play. However, BBC football pundit Chris Sutton now argues that the team is lacking identity under Lopetegui, something that was more evident when Moyes was in charge.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5’s Monday Night Club, Sutton said: “David Moyes had a clear style of football, whether you liked it or not. West Ham wanted to play more progressive football, but at least you knew what Moyes’ teams were about – they were built around counter-attacking.”
West Ham suffered one of their most disappointing performances of the season on Saturday, losing 3-0 to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Chris Wood opened the scoring, and the situation worsened for the Hammers when Edson Álvarez was sent off just before half-time for a second yellow card. In the second half, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ola Aina added further goals to seal a commanding win for Forest.
Lopetegui now faces a crucial match against Everton in West Ham’s final game before the international break. The Hammers will be playing at home against a team many expect to be battling relegation. A loss to the Toffees would make it extremely difficult to see Lopetegui surviving at the helm.
