“What a Smart and luck move by Le Bris”- Sunderland hit the jackpot by selling their £8m star, whose value has now plummeted by millions.
Sunderland has been actively searching for a prolific striker for some time, but their recent efforts in the transfer market to bolster their forward line have been somewhat underwhelming. Last season, the Black Cats struggled in attack, with new signings like Mason Burstow and Nazariy Rusyn failing to make an impact. Rusyn, in particular, managed only two goals during the entire campaign in the Championship.
However, manager Regis Le Bris may have found the solution to Sunderland’s attacking woes in Wilson Isidor, who has been impressing on loan from Zenit St. Petersburg.
Sunderland had to wait until the end of the summer transfer window to secure Isidor’s services, but the French forward’s performances have justified the delay. In ten Championship appearances so far, he has scored four goals, including a stunning first-time strike against Oxford United last month.
Despite Isidor’s promising form, there is concern that he may not commit to a permanent transfer, which would leave Sunderland searching for a reliable goalscorer once again. His arrival could be seen as the first real bright spot up front for Sunderland since the departure of Ross Stewart. While Stewart’s exit was initially a blow, it may now be viewed as a smart move, given Isidor’s potential and the need for fresh talent.
Ross Stewart’s transfer value in 2024 has dropped significantly since his £8m move to Southampton last summer. Known for his lethal goal-scoring abilities at Sunderland, Stewart had netted 40 goals in 80 games for the Black Cats, including the decisive winner in their 2-0 play-off final victory over Wycombe in 2022, which secured their return to the Championship. However, Stewart’s time at Southampton has been plagued by injury, and he has struggled to make an impact, failing to score in the league across nine appearances.
With Stewart’s value now estimated at around £3.7m, Sunderland may feel they got the better end of the deal by selling him when they did, especially given his ongoing fitness issues at Southampton. While the Black Cats won’t take pleasure in Stewart’s struggles, they’ll be hoping Isidor can step into the void and replicate his success, with promotion to the Premier League remaining the ultimate goal for Le Bris and his team.
