Sunderland have found a new goal-scoring hero in Wilson Isidor, and while they have the option to make his loan move permanent next summer, they also appear to have a backup plan in mind.
Isidor, who joined Sunderland on loan from Zenit St Petersburg during the summer, has quickly become a fan favorite, impressing both on and off the pitch. The French forward has netted four goals in 10 Championship appearances so far this season. Sunderland have the option to buy him permanently for £3.5 million next summer, which would make him the most expensive signing of the Kyril Louis-Dreyfus era.
Looking ahead, Sunderland could be prepared to spend more than in recent years. If the club achieves promotion to the Premier League, additional signings will be necessary. However, if promotion doesn’t materialize, the club may have to sell some players, creating a need for reinforcements.
Alexandre Mendy Could Be Sunderland’s Backup Plan
Isidor’s move to Sunderland came as something of a surprise, with reports indicating that his transfer was completed in just two days. But before Isidor’s arrival, Sunderland had their sights set on Alexandre Mendy, the striker from Caen.
Mendy’s potential move to Sunderland turned into a lengthy saga that spanned several weeks, with the player publicly pushing for the transfer, but the deal ultimately fell through. Both Sunderland and Caen were firm in their respective valuations of Mendy, and no agreement was reached.
However, Mendy has continued to impress this season, scoring seven goals in 10 Ligue 2 appearances, including three in his last two games. He has now become Caen’s all-time top scorer with 71 goals since joining the club in 2020.
What’s Next for Alexandre Mendy?
Mendy’s current contract with Caen runs until 2026, but his future beyond that remains uncertain. Caen manager Nicolas Seube recently stated that Mendy has moved on from his failed move to Sunderland, but if he maintains his impressive form, it’s likely that transfer interest will arise again, either in the January or summer transfer windows of 2025.
If Caen and Mendy fail to reach a new agreement, selling him next summer would make sense from a financial standpoint. Sunderland’s Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman, will certainly be keeping an eye on Mendy’s performances and contract situation, especially as both Isidor and Aaron Connolly are only with the club on loan for the current season.
