‘Not happy’ – Luke O’Nien delivers frank assessment of Sunderland performance vs Preston
Sunderland defender Luke O’Nien has offered a candid assessment of his team’s performance in their 0-0 draw against Preston North End on Wednesday evening.
Despite the stalemate at Deepdale extending their unbeaten streak to seven matches and keeping them at the top of the Championship, O’Nien admitted that the Black Cats didn’t perform at their best. While Preston created several strong chances, Sunderland struggled to find their rhythm against a team currently just above the relegation zone on goal difference.
In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, O’Nien expressed disappointment with the result, saying, “I’m probably not happy with just a point because I don’t think we deserved it. Our performance wasn’t there. Preston had a number of good chances compared to us. We take the point when we don’t play well, but there’s a lot to reflect on, and a lot to learn from that game.”
He continued, “We’ve worked really hard to get to this position, and maybe we need to step back and ask, ‘What got us here?’ and focus on doing those things again instead of changing too much. We’re a good team. Tommy [Watson] made his first start, which was great for him because he’s been excellent in training. He did well, and he’ll continue to improve. So, there are positives, and we’ll review the match tomorrow before preparing for the weekend.”
When asked about Sunderland’s struggles during the game, the club captain said: “We didn’t quite have the flow we usually do, and the build-up play wasn’t there. In and out of possession, we were a step behind. We’re a good team, and we still managed to get a point, showing a lot of character. It takes a good team to grind out a result like that.”
He added, “We’ll review it tomorrow and figure out where it went wrong. Even after wins, we analyze and identify what could have been better, and this game is no different. It wasn’t the performance we wanted, but when we look back at the end of the season, I’m sure this will be a valuable point.”
