“I think there’s only one winner in this game though which is……”- Paul Merson dropped Man Utd vs Leicester City scoreline prediction. Can’t believe he make such Bizzare take on Leicester City
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has made his scoreline prediction for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s final match as interim manager of Manchester United against Leicester City.
Van Nistelrooy, who took over at Old Trafford last week after Erik ten Hag’s departure, began his brief spell with a 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup round of 16. He followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea and a 2-0 win over PAOK in the Europa League. Sunday’s Premier League clash with Leicester will mark the end of his tenure before the November international break.
Having returned to Manchester United as part of Ten Hag’s coaching staff this summer, Van Nistelrooy is set to leave the club after Sunday’s match.
Merson Discusses Amorim’s Challenge at United
In his Sportskeeda column, Merson shared his thoughts on Ruben Amorim’s upcoming appointment as Manchester United’s permanent manager. United triggered the £9.25m release clause for the 39-year-old Portuguese coach, who has impressed at Sporting CP. Amorim will join United on 11th November with a contract running until June 2027.
However, Merson believes Amorim faces a difficult challenge at Old Trafford. “I really think Ruben Amorim has his work cut out,” he said. “While the expectations aren’t high, Manchester United lacks a clear plan compared to other big teams, and it’s unclear whether Amorim’s system will suit the current squad.”
Amorim is known for playing a 3-4-3 formation at Sporting, but Merson questioned whether United’s defenders, who lack pace, are suited to this setup. He also noted that United lacks a prolific No. 9 and doesn’t have the creative midfielders needed for a system like Amorim’s.
Merson Criticizes Zirkzee’s Struggles
Merson also expressed concerns about Manchester United’s summer signing Joshua Zirkzee. The 23-year-old Dutch striker, who arrived from Bologna for £36.54m, has struggled to find form, scoring just once in 16 appearances for United across all competitions. Zirkzee made an immediate impact on his debut with a winning goal against Fulham, but his performance has been lackluster since.
“I don’t know where Zirkzee fits in,” Merson said. “He’s still trying to find his identity at Manchester United. It’s tough for any player when you’re always on the back foot at a big club like United, and it’s clear he’s struggling.”
Merson’s Prediction for Manchester United vs Leicester
Despite some concerns, Merson is backing Van Nistelrooy to finish his interim reign on a high, predicting a 3-1 victory for Manchester United against Leicester City.
“Leicester did well to salvage a point against Ipswich last weekend,” Merson noted. “A defeat would have been disastrous for them. Jamie Vardy needs to stay fit for Leicester to avoid relegation. But I think there’s only one winner here, and it’s not Leicester.”
