Ange Postecoglou has taken full responsibility for Tottenham’s surprising 2-1 defeat at home to Ipswich Town on Sunday.
Spurs were beaten despite a late header from Rodrigo Bentancur, with first-half goals from Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap sealing Ipswich’s victory—marking their first top-flight win since April 2002. The loss leaves Tottenham 10th in the Premier League, just in the top half on goal difference over Brentford. Had Spurs won, they would have moved up to third, behind Liverpool and Manchester City.
The defeat follows a 3-2 loss to Galatasaray in the Europa League on Thursday, meaning Tottenham have now lost back-to-back matches and three of their last five league games.
After the final whistle, with boos echoing from the stands, Postecoglou faced the media and acknowledged the pressure on his team. However, rather than blaming the players, he took responsibility for the result.
“It’s hugely disappointing,” Postecoglou said to BBC Sport. “We started slow and passively, giving ourselves a mountain to climb. In the second half, we had chances but didn’t do enough to win the game. It’s down to me—I’m not getting consistent performances from the players. I need to address that. As the person in charge, I take full responsibility. We can’t afford to put ourselves in situations like that.”
Tottenham’s next challenge comes after the international break with a tough trip to Manchester City, followed by a home Europa League match against Roma and a London derby against Fulham.
