Ao Tanaka has been a revelation for Leeds United since stepping into the starting lineup following injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, with the Japan international quickly becoming a key figure for the club.
The 26-year-old has started and completed eight consecutive Championship matches for Leeds, playing as the defensive midfielder alongside Joe Rothwell. Tanaka has excelled in this deeper role, controlling the tempo and providing stability in midfield.
Although this position is a departure from his usual attacking role—where he was known for scoring and creating chances during his time at Düsseldorf—Tanaka has adapted seamlessly to being the team’s defensive lynchpin in the absence of his injured teammates.
Tanaka’s impressive performances earned him the October Player of the Month award for Leeds, with the midfielder securing 54% of the vote, ahead of Wilfried Gnonto, Joe Rothwell, and Largie Ramazani, who also received votes.
Tanaka’s Goal Ambition After Player of the Month Award
One thing that stands out about Tanaka is his composure on the ball. Former Leeds player Tony Dorigo recently praised his calmness, describing him as one of the most composed players he’s ever seen. Tanaka rarely gives the ball away and his passing has been a highlight. However, one area where he is yet to make an impact is in terms of goals and assists. Despite this, Tanaka has already attempted more shots than teammate Glen Kamara.
Speaking after winning the October award, Tanaka expressed his desire to score in front of the Leeds supporters: “I can’t thank my teammates and the coaching staff enough. They’ve been a huge support since I arrived, always helping me,” he told the club’s official website. “I’m really appreciative of their guidance and they are the reason I’ve managed to win this award. The fans have been great, and I really want to score a goal for them as soon as possible.”
Tanaka’s Strong Start at Leeds
Signed for £3.4m, Tanaka could have been forgiven for struggling with the pace and physicality of the Championship, having previously played in Japan and the second tier of the Bundesliga. However, his performances have been impressive, showcasing his ability to thrive in the English second tier.
With Ampadu and Gruev expected to return in late December, the competition for midfield spots will intensify. Leeds manager Daniel Farke will likely start Ampadu when fully fit, but the question remains—who partners him in midfield? Rothwell has certainly staked his claim, but given Tanaka’s form, it’s hard to look past the Japanese midfielder when all four are available for selection.
