“The law is clear…” – Former PGMOL chief gives verdict on Solanke’s handball decision vs Ipswich Town
Tottenham Hotspur have been enduring a tough spell lately, with inconsistency proving costly for the team. This issue was further exacerbated last weekend when Ipswich Town secured a surprising victory at White Hart Lane, handing Spurs a disappointing defeat.
The Lilywhites hosted the Tractor Boys at home, hoping to bounce back from a midweek loss to Galatasaray in the Europa League. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse as Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich side outplayed and outsmarted Spurs, clinching all three points.
Spurs Suffer Shock Loss to Ipswich
Tottenham controlled possession for large stretches of the game but struggled to create meaningful chances, while Ipswich played with greater purpose and managed to score twice in the first half, leaving Spurs with an uphill battle. In the second half, when Spurs were still trailing by two, Dominic Solanke found the net, but his goal was ruled out after a VAR review determined the ball had struck his arm following a deflection off the former Liverpool striker.
VAR Controversy?
Keith Hackett, the former English referee and ex-chief of the PGMOL, defended the decision to disallow Solanke’s goal. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham Hotspur News, Hackett explained: “The law is clear. Even if the handball is accidental, a goal cannot be scored with the use of your arm. In this case, it was the correct decision.”
The defeat dropped Tottenham to 10th in the Premier League standings, and while former scout Bryan King has stated that manager Ange Postecoglou’s job is not in jeopardy, the pressure is mounting as Spurs continue to struggle with inconsistency and failing to secure vital results in key matches.
