One Tottenham player seems to be finding some form on the international stage and has received praise for his performances following recent criticism from fans.
Spurs Face Man City After International Break
After a challenging end to their last set of matches before the international break, Tottenham now face a tough task: an away trip to Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. This could be one of the better times to play City, with Pep Guardiola’s side currently on a rare losing streak of four consecutive defeats across all competitions—something that hasn’t happened during his tenure at City.
Interestingly, the first of those defeats came at the hands of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham, who secured a 2-1 victory over City in the Carabao Cup just two weeks ago. Goals from Timo Werner—scoring his first since March—and a stunning long-range strike by Pape Matar Sarr sealed the win. However, to repeat such heroics against a City side still full of talent, Spurs will need to show significant improvement on their recent performances.
Tottenham suffered a 3-2 defeat to Turkish champions Galatasaray last week, a result that flattered Postecoglou’s side, as the home team could have easily won by a larger margin given the chances they created. That was followed by a poor 2-1 loss at home to Ipswich Town in the Premier League, with players like Radu Dragusin and Pedro Porro enduring difficult performances in that match.
Depending on whether Micky van de Ven is fit to return, Postecoglou will need to consider potential changes to his lineup. Both Dragusin and Porro will have to improve if they are to hold their places.
Son Heung-min Earns Praise After International Heroics
One player who also faced criticism for his performance against Ipswich was star forward Son Heung-min. The £190,000-per-week striker has contributed three goals and three assists in his first eight Premier League matches this season, but his display against Ipswich failed to impress some fans.
However, Son’s performances for South Korea on international duty have helped lift his spirits, according to pundit John Wenham. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham suggested that Son’s recent form with his national team could serve as a confidence boost.
The 32-year-old forward scored his 50th international goal with a penalty against Kuwait on Thursday, leading South Korea to a 3-1 victory in a World Cup qualifier. “To reach 50 goals for South Korea is impressive,” Wenham said. “It was a penalty, but you still have to convert it—penalties are never easy. Hopefully, this gives Son a confidence boost. He faced a lot of criticism from fans after his display against Ipswich, but that’s because his standards are so high. He’s a world-class player, so expectations are naturally very high.”
