“Shocking Rodrigo Bentancur Ban: The Controversial Comment to Son, His Captain’s Bold Response, and the FA’s Stunning Decision….
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-match suspension by the FA after making a racist comment about teammate Son Heung-Min and the South Korea national team this summer.
The 27-year-old will miss crucial matches against Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United before he is eligible to return on Boxing Day. Additionally, Bentancur has been fined £100,000 following the conclusion of an FA investigation into his remarks.
Son and the club had sought to resolve the matter when it first occurred, with both the Tottenham captain and the club issuing public statements addressing the issue. Bentancur has featured in 15 matches across all competitions this season, scoring one goal in the recent defeat to Ipswich Town.
What Rodrigo Bentancur Said About Son Heung-Min
The controversy began during an appearance on the Uruguayan television show Por La Camiseta while Bentancur was on international duty. When asked by host Rafa Cotelo about showing one of his teammate’s shirts, Bentancur responded, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too, as they all look the same.”
The comment quickly circulated online, and Son responded publicly, criticizing his teammate’s words. However, he later expressed forgiveness, confirming that the two had discussed the incident privately.
Son’s Response to Bentancur’s Remark
In an Instagram post, Son wrote: “I’ve spoken with Lolo. He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised. Lolo would never intentionally say something offensive. We’re brothers, and nothing has changed at all. We’re past this, we’re united, and we will be back together in pre-season to fight for our club as one.”
Tottenham also released a statement, emphasizing that all players would receive further education as part of the club’s commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion. The club backed Son’s decision to move on and focus on the upcoming season.
FA Confirms Bentancur’s Ban
On Monday, the FA confirmed the sanction, stating: “An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and a £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview.”
The statement explained that Bentancur had violated FA Rule E3.1 by using improper, abusive, or insulting language, and that the incident constituted an “aggravated breach” under FA Rule E3.2 because it involved a reference to nationality, race, or ethnic origin.
Bentancur denied the charge, but after a hearing, the independent Regulatory Commission ruled the breach was proven and imposed the suspension and fine.
