Leicester City players Jannik Vestergaard and Victor Kristiansen featured for Denmark in their goalless draw against Serbia on Monday night.
Denmark had to withstand heavy pressure from the Serbian side in Belgrade, with the hosts registering 22 shots compared to Denmark’s eight.
Both Vestergaard and Kristiansen started the match but struggled to make an impact, with the two defenders among the lowest-rated players on the field for Denmark.
Mads Hermansen, the other Leicester City player in the Denmark squad, remained an unused substitute. While Vestergaard showed some signs of improvement, it was Kristiansen who came under intense scrutiny for his performance. The 21-year-old left-back was given a harsh one-star rating by Danish outlet Tipsbladet, the lowest of any player on the pitch.
The verdict from Danish media was critical, with one outlet stating: “Kristiansen once again had a dreadful evening. He lost his marker after just 20 minutes, allowing Serbia a clear chance. He seemed unsettled from the start, making numerous mispasses. His performance in the second half was slightly better.”
B.T. also criticized his display, commenting: “Did Zivkovic have bad breath? In the first half, Kristiansen maintained too much distance from the Serbian winger, allowing dangerous crosses to be delivered repeatedly. His sloppy clearances also handed Serbia further opportunities, though he did improve marginally in the second half, earning a rating of 2/6.”
Ekstrabladet was similarly scathing, giving Kristiansen a score of two and stating: “There’s doubt whether he blocked a single cross. His defending was terrible, and it looked as if he was inviting the Serbs to have free rein in the area. He almost gifted Serbia a free-kick in the second half, only for Schmeichel to intervene. He did show some improvement after the break.”
As the January transfer window approaches, Leicester may be forced to explore defensive reinforcements. With Ricardo Pereira confirmed to be out for four months, the club’s options at full-back are limited to Kristiansen, James Justin, and Luke Thomas. While Justin and Kristiansen are expected to retain their spots, Thomas has not been at the required level for Premier League play.
Pereira will be in the midst of his rehabilitation by January, but given his history of long-term injuries, it’s unlikely he will return to his peak form immediately. In light of this, Leicester may target a versatile full-back who can play on either flank, strengthening their squad and bolstering their fight to maintain Premier League status.
