“How is that possible? Seriously. It’s almost the worst I’ve seen”- Newcastle United star Alexander Isak left ‘furious’ at ‘worst CONTROVERSIAL VAR decision’ on Sweden duty
Alexander Isak has described the decision to disallow his perfectly legitimate goal during Sweden’s 6-0 victory over Azerbaijan as one of the “worst” he’s ever seen, after VAR officials made a glaring error in the Nations League.
The Newcastle United striker thought he had scored just before halftime, racing down the left wing and firing past Azerbaijan goalkeeper Rza Jafarov at his near post. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, not by the on-field linesman, but by the VAR officials. Replays showed Isak was clearly onside when his teammate Viktor Gyokeres passed him the ball, making the decision even more controversial.
The VAR officials, using a different camera angle, wrongly positioned their on-screen lines when reviewing the play, leading to the incorrect offside call and frustration within the Sweden camp. Although Isak later missed a penalty in the dominant win, Gyokeres scored four of Sweden’s six goals as they capped off their Nations League campaign in style.
“How is that possible? Seriously. It’s almost the worst I’ve seen,” Isak told Swedish media after the match. “I’m happy, of course, that we won, but when you score a goal that should count and it gets ruled out, it’s frustrating.
“I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like this at this level. You see mistakes, but this one was pretty rough. The VAR referees were in the tunnel at halftime. We argued with them, but they stuck to their decision, insisting they made the right call.”
Sweden’s coach, Jon Dahl Tomasson, also expressed his anger at the decision. “I was furious. The whole team was furious. I don’t understand it. For me, it was a goal, but we can’t change it.”
Before Tuesday’s victory, Isak had scored four goals in his last three appearances for Sweden, adding to the four he’s netted in his last four games for Newcastle. The forward appears to be back to his best after a difficult spell earlier in the season.
