Sunderland’s squad is already brimming with exciting young talent, and while they’re currently leading the table, there’s another teenage star on the rise who could soon make a splash at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats are enjoying a fantastic season, sitting at the top of the Championship after the first third of the campaign, albeit on goal difference. Manager Regis Le Bris has done a remarkable job of getting the best out of his youthful squad, proving that success can be built around emerging talent.
One of those young talents is 17-year-old Chris Rigg, who has burst onto the scene this season, already scoring three goals. His performances have caught the eye of several Premier League clubs, but Sunderland fans need not worry—another exciting prospect is emerging from the Academy of Light.
Trey Ogunsuyi, a 17-year-old striker, is in red-hot form for Sunderland’s youth team this season and is making a strong impression on first-team manager Le Bris. Ogunsuyi scored twice in a dominant 4-0 victory over Tamworth in the National League Cup, bringing his tally for the season to eight goals.
The young striker has seamlessly made the step up to Sunderland’s Under-21s, playing alongside older teammates and holding his own despite the age difference. His coach, Graeme Murty, has praised Ogunsuyi’s development, noting that he has “improved immeasurably” and is now “using his body a lot better.” Murty also commended Ogunsuyi for his understanding of the game at this level and his fearlessness in challenging for the ball in key areas.
Regis Le Bris has also been keeping a close eye on Ogunsuyi, and in a September interview with the Northern Echo, he described the young forward as a “very interesting player for the future.” Ogunsuyi has already made two appearances on the first-team bench this season, against Plymouth Argyle and Middlesbrough, and it seems only a matter of time before he makes his senior debut.
While Ogunsuyi will need to be patient as Sunderland are currently in strong form, if he continues his impressive development, Le Bris is likely to give him an opportunity before the season ends. Just like Chris Rigg, Ogunsuyi’s talent could soon see him follow in the footsteps of the club’s rising stars.
