Farhad Moshiri is in the process of selling Everton to the Friedkin Group, with the deal expected to go through by mid-December, assuming everything goes as planned. The main remaining hurdle is the Premier League’s owners and directors test, but the Friedkin Group is confident it will pass this stage without issues.
If the sale is completed, it would mark a fresh chapter for the club, offering fans the hope of a brighter future. The goal is to restore Everton to its former glory, competing for trophies in a new stadium.
In a recent podcast with Landon Donovan, Tim Howard shared a personal story about Bill Kenwright’s approach to selling the club. Kenwright, who was part of the group that sold a 49.9% stake to Moshiri in 2016, remained at the helm for several years after the deal. He had been involved with Everton since 1989, taking control in 1999 and serving as chairman from 2004 until his death last year.
Howard, a club legend with 414 appearances for Everton, recounted a private conversation he had with Kenwright in the final days of his tenure. Despite intense pressure from fans to sell the club, Kenwright confided in Howard about his cautious approach. According to Howard, Kenwright said, “I grew up on the Terraces, my grandfather took me there to watch Everton. I’m going to sell the club, but I have to find the right buyer who will take care of it.”
Kenwright’s words, as Howard pointed out, turned out to be prophetic. He feared that the wrong buyer might pump money into the club but lead it in the wrong direction. In the end, he made sure the sale was to someone who could be trusted with Everton’s future, though some fans had initially pushed for a quicker, more financially-driven sale.
Howard also reflected on his time at Everton, where he made over 400 appearances, behind only Ted Sagar and Neville Southall for most games played by a goalkeeper. While his time at the club didn’t bring silverware, one of his most memorable moments was scoring a wind-assisted goal against Bolton Wanderers. He also set a record with 210 consecutive appearances, and earned 121 caps for the US national team.
Despite the lack of major trophies, Howard’s legacy at Everton is firmly cemented as one of the club’s all-time greats.
