While there is often speculation about potential signings, in the last nine winter transfer windows, the club has usually focused on moving out players rather than bringing in new ones.
Given the club’s current position, January has generally been used as a time to loan out younger players or offload those who are struggling for game time. While Leicester will likely pursue new signings in the new year, it is expected that more players will depart than join the club.
Here are five players who could leave Leicester in January, potentially on short-term loans:
Danny Ward
With Jakub Stolarczyk nearing full fitness after a summer injury, the Polish goalkeeper’s return could push Danny Ward further down the pecking order. Additionally, Ward’s position as Wales’ number one is now under threat from Karl Darlow. For Leicester, January might present their last opportunity to secure a small fee for Ward, whose contract expires in the summer.
Daniel Iversen
Similar to Ward, Daniel Iversen faces the challenge of being sidelined by Stolarczyk’s return. With just six months remaining on his contract come January, Iversen could look for regular football elsewhere. Derby County showed interest in him over the summer, and it wouldn’t be surprising if clubs in the Championship or League One come calling. Iversen has proven his ability during past loan spells, especially with Preston.
Conor Coady
Conor Coady has made only one Premier League appearance this season, coming on as a substitute at Crystal Palace, where he conceded a late penalty. Given his prior experience as a regular starter, Coady’s lack of playing time this season will likely be frustrating. If Leicester manage to bring in a new centre-back, they could allow Coady to leave. However, recalling Ben Nelson from his loan at Oxford is no longer an option due to a thigh injury that will sideline the 20-year-old for up to four months.
Kasey McAteer
Kasey McAteer has been limited to just five substitute appearances in the Premier League, totaling 36 minutes on the pitch. He hasn’t made the squad for other league matches, and with competition for attacking roles from the likes of Jordan Ayew, Abdul Fatawu, Stephy Mavididi, Facundo Buonanotte, Bilal El Khannouss, and Bobby De Cordova-Reid, McAteer is unlikely to get much playing time. If he remains on the fringes at Leicester, a loan move could be the best option for his development.
Will Alves
Like McAteer, Will Alves has found himself limited to a couple of substitute appearances in the Carabao Cup this season. Manager Steve Cooper mentioned considering a loan for Alves in the summer, but no suitable offer materialized. Given Alves’ talent, it’s hoped that EFL clubs will be eager to take him on loan in the second half of the campaign. Securing a loan move for the promising attacking midfielder would be a positive outcome for the club’s incoming loans manager.
