“Leeds United’s January Transfer Ambitions Shattered After Bombshell Comments from Angus Kinnear
Daniel Farke must have been hoping for an eventful January transfer window after seeing several key players sidelined with injuries at Leeds United.
Throughout the 2024/25 season, the team has already dealt with absences from Dan James and Largie Ramazani, but the injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev have been particularly significant. Thankfully, Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell have stepped up to fill the gaps, preventing what could have been serious setbacks for the squad. However, the second half of the season could look very different if more long-term injuries occur.
Leeds have already made a “bold attempt” to sign James McAtee from Manchester City, with the Premier League champions reportedly willing to accept a £20 million transfer fee in January [CaughtOffside]. A loan deal would likely be more feasible for the Championship club, though it remains unclear if Man City would agree to this, especially with competition for McAtee’s signature heating up.
In addition to McAtee, Burnley’s Josh Brownhill has also emerged as a potential target, with the 29-year-old’s contract at Turf Moor set to expire at the end of the season [TBR Football].
While Leeds fans are understandably excited by these transfer rumors, the club’s chief executive, Angus Kinnear, may have dampened expectations for a busy January. In recent comments at the SAB meeting on November 5th (published on November 20th), Kinnear spoke about the “real confidence and togetherness” within the squad, citing the team’s 4-0 win over Plymouth as an example of how they are “able to dominate, rotate, and bring youth through.”
Kinnear’s optimism about the current squad is understandable, given the team’s unity, but with multiple injuries plaguing the side, that togetherness is being tested. If Leeds are to secure promotion to the Premier League this season, after narrowly missing out last year, a few fresh additions in January could prove crucial. It seems, however, that Kinnear may need some convincing.
