“It’s dangerous and the fact they haven’t checked it is BIZARRE he lost his rag and need to be sent off”- Ex-Premier League striker Darren Bent could not believe Wilfred Ndidi escaped a red card against Chelsea.
Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi received a yellow card for a heavy challenge on Cole Palmer during the first half of their Premier League match. Replays showed Ndidi’s studs made contact with Palmer’s Achilles.
The incident was reviewed by VAR, which saw no reason to overturn the referee’s decision and did not call for a review. VAR reportedly concluded that Ndidi’s challenge came from a short distance and lacked enough force to warrant further action.
However, former England striker Darren Bent disagreed, expressing his frustration during his talkSPORT commentary. He said, “It’s a terrible challenge. There’s clear intent, and the ball isn’t involved. I’m surprised they didn’t review it. Is it endangering an opponent? Absolutely.”
He continued, “The fact the referee didn’t check it is concerning. Ndidi’s lucky to have gotten away with that. It’s blatant and dangerous, and I find it strange that it wasn’t reviewed.”
Ndidi was one of three Leicester players cautioned in the first half, with Boubakary Soumaré and Oliver Skipp also receiving yellow cards for fouls. For Chelsea, Moisés Caicedo was booked in a physical opening period.
VAR was also involved in disallowing a potential second goal for Chelsea when Noni Madueke’s effort was ruled out for an offside against Marc Cucurella in the build-up.
At halftime, Chelsea led 1-0 thanks to Nicolas Jackson’s goal in the 15th minute.
