BREAKING: Leicester City have officially announced their potential new manager to replace Steve Cooper, with Ruud van Nistelrooy also under consideration.
Leicester City have named Graham Potter as their top choice to succeed Steve Cooper, although his salary demands could prompt them to consider other candidates, including Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Cooper was dismissed on Sunday after a challenging five-month tenure during which he failed to connect with the club. His Nottingham Forest background alienated some supporters, and he struggled to implement his tactical vision. A 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea, under former manager Enzo Maresca, ultimately sealed his fate.
Potter had been Leicester’s preferred candidate to replace Maresca last summer, but discussions stalled due to concerns over the 49-year-old’s age and his apparent desire to manage a bigger club. Instead, Leicester opted for Cooper, despite some internal resistance to the appointment. Now, with Potter having been out of work since his departure from Chelsea in March 2023, Leicester feel they might have a better chance at securing him, although it is believed that he would still need significant persuasion.
While Potter remains the ideal choice, Leicester are also exploring alternative options, with van Nistelrooy reportedly on the shortlist. The Dutch manager has made a strong impression in his brief coaching career, including an interim role at Manchester United where he successfully motivated a struggling squad after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal. Van Nistelrooy also achieved success during his time at PSV Eindhoven, winning the Dutch Cup, before resigning with one match left in the season due to a lack of support.
