Dejan Kulusevski believes his exceptional stamina distinguishes him from “any other player” and insists he never feels fatigued after delivering another stellar performance in Tottenham’s 4-0 victory over Manchester City.
This season, Kulusevski has thrived in a central role for Ange Postecoglou’s team, but he returned to the right wing at the Etihad, where he assisted James Maddison’s opening goal and played a crucial part in Pedro Porro’s strike for Spurs’ third goal.
Maddison doubled Tottenham’s lead before halftime, and Brennan Johnson sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal, handing Pep Guardiola’s struggling City their fifth consecutive defeat.
Asked if he felt unstoppable after the match, Kulusevski replied, “Yes, I feel like that. I feel very good, and I’m doing my best to keep it that way.
“I’m really happy and working hard to improve. I’ve started the season well, but there’s still more than half of it to go, and I hope to keep getting better.
“I believe I have something that no other player has, so I can’t be compared to anyone else. I watch other players and learn from them, but with my stamina and determination, I don’t get tired.
“I don’t tire out and I refuse to let anyone outwork me. That’s my mindset, both in how I play and train.
“I feel like there’s still so much I can do in my career. It’s important to always strive to be better, on and off the pitch, every day.
“Right now, I’m giving my best and not putting too much pressure on myself. Mistakes happen, but I’m maturing and enjoying my football more than ever.
“I’m improving, especially as a forward,” Kulusevski added. “It’s vital for the club that I take responsibility and help the younger players. They trust me, and I have a lot of faith in them, so we really enjoy playing together.”
In his six league appearances against City, Kulusevski has now contributed six goals and assists, and he revealed that he looks forward to facing the champions more than any other team, largely due to the space Guardiola’s side leaves for opponents.
“This is the best result of my career,” Kulusevski said. “It’s a huge night for the entire club, the coach, and the players. I believed we could achieve this because we’ve played well here in past years. This is the match I look forward to most every year, and once again, it’s happened, so glory to God.
“City dominates possession, so we can sometimes rest while defending. There’s also a lot of space on the field, we play one-on-one, and that’s always dangerous because of the quality we have.”
Sunday’s result was even more impressive considering Tottenham’s previous two away defeats to Crystal Palace and Ipswich, teams that had not won before. Kulusevski added, “It’s always great to play against top teams because they want to play football. When we face lower teams, it’s different. There’s not much football played, as it’s often filled with fouls and injuries, and the game slows down.
“We need to be much more consistent. This isn’t a turning point; we must be better in other games. This match suited us perfectly, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement in other fixtures.
“We need to keep climbing, especially against lower-ranked teams. It’s up to all of us to take responsibility because we’re a talented group, and now we have to deliver every day.”
