Tony Cascarino has expressed his frustration with referee Chris Kavanagh after he showed Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard a red card for a challenge on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during their 0-0 draw on Saturday.
Norgaard was sent off in the 41st minute of the match on 23 November after he accidentally caught Pickford with his leg while attempting to reach a pass from Ethan Pinnock that was just out of his reach.
Speaking on talkSPORT (24 November, 08:40am), Cascarino voiced his disagreement with the decision:
“No, I don’t think it’s a red card,” Cascarino said. “Any manager would be frustrated if a player didn’t at least try to get a touch on the ball, especially if there’s a chance to score. It was accidental. Pickford came rushing out of his goal, and he’s free to make those kinds of challenges—he did the same with Van Dijk, didn’t he? You can’t be refereeing like this. I get frustrated with how soft the game has become, with red cards and penalties being handed out so easily. The game is too soft.”
Everton Fail to Make Most of Man Advantage
From the 41st minute onward, Everton were given the advantage of an extra man on the pitch, but they couldn’t take full advantage, settling for a frustrating draw.
This season has been a rollercoaster for Everton, with occasional unbeaten runs quickly followed by disappointing results, such as their performance against Brentford. The club has consistently found itself battling relegation in recent years, and while fans hoped for a fresh start after new signings like Iliman Ndiaye, the inconsistency remains.
As the season progresses, the pressure is mounting on manager Sean Dyche. If things don’t improve soon, it’s unclear how much longer he will hold onto his job, especially as his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season.
