BREAKING: Sensational Tottenham Hotspur left-back is reportedly prepared to terminate his Lilywhites contract in order to secure an exit from North London in January.
Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon is reportedly considering the option of terminating his contract in order to secure a move away from North London in January.
The Spain international has been sidelined under manager Ange Postecoglou, making just one appearance in the 2024-25 campaign. That came in the 3-2 EFL Cup win over Coventry City in September, where Reguilon was an unused substitute and hasn’t featured since.
Reguilon was not included in Spurs’ Europa League squad and has not played a minute of Premier League football this season. Destiny Udogie has been the clear first-choice left-back when fit, with Ben Davies and Micky van de Ven also preferred ahead of Reguilon.
With just over a year remaining on his contract, Reguilon could enter pre-contract talks with foreign clubs in January ahead of a potential free transfer at the end of the season. However, he reportedly does not want to wait until the summer and is seeking a mutual contract termination with Tottenham, according to the Sunday Mirror, via football.london.
Reguilon is reportedly earning £120,000 a week at Spurs, but Postecoglou made it clear in the summer that he was not part of his plans. Tottenham were unable to find a buyer, but now Reguilon is said to be attracting interest from clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, who could afford his high wages on a free transfer.
If Spurs agree to cancel his contract, they would take a significant financial hit on the £25m they paid Real Madrid for Reguilon in 2020, a move that followed his standout performances during Sevilla’s 2019-20 Europa League triumph. However, Reguilon has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League, contributing just two goals and eight assists in 67 appearances for Spurs, with his last match for the club coming in April 2022.
Since then, Reguilon has had mixed loan spells at Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, and Brentford, performing poorly at the first two clubs but impressing at Brentford with four assists in 16 appearances.
Other Tottenham players could also be on the move in 2025. Ben Davies, another long-serving member of the squad, has a contract expiring at the end of the season, and an extension seems unlikely due to his age. Meanwhile, the agent of Radu Dragusin has suggested that the Romanian defender may seek a move if his playing time does not improve, although Dragusin has started Tottenham’s last three Premier League matches due to injuries to Van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
In Saturday’s 4-0 win over Manchester City, Davies and Dragusin played together at the back, helping Spurs keep an unexpected clean sheet as they handed the champions their fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions.
