Eddie Howe has shared his thoughts on Newcastle United’s 2-0 home defeat to West Ham United. The Magpies were aiming for a fourth consecutive victory to climb to sixth in the Premier League, but goals from Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka sealed their loss.
Soucek opened the scoring just 10 minutes in with a header from Emerson’s corner, and Wan-Bissaka added a second early in the second half. Howe expressed that he was “pretty pleased” with his team’s performance for the first hour but “didn’t enjoy” the final 30 minutes.
“I don’t think anything surprises me in the Premier League, as we know every team has its qualities,” Howe said. “We were the dominant side at halftime, and the game could have been very different had we equalized before the break. Up until the 60-minute mark, I was happy with our play, despite the score being 2-0. We created chances and opened them up. However, the last 30 minutes weren’t enjoyable. We pushed too hard to score, and we’ll regret that when we watch the game again.”
He also pointed out that individual mistakes led to both goals, describing it as disappointing and uncharacteristic, given their solid defensive form in recent weeks. “At the end, we had players out of position, which didn’t look good. But until that 60-minute mark, we were the dominant team.”
Meanwhile, West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance. “We are happy with how we played. We had one clear identity and managed to overcome a very strong team. Newcastle started well, and it’s always good to build confidence,” he said.
Lopetegui praised his team’s overall effort, noting that they had limited Newcastle to just two chances and deserved the win. “I’m happy for the players, the team, and the fans, especially since they had to travel a long way. We’re looking forward to the next challenge, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
