Jarrod Bowen has credited his team’s ability to manage the atmosphere at St James’ Park as a key factor in West Ham’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United. Goals from Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka secured the win, easing the pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui. Soucek’s early header from a corner put the Hammers ahead, and Wan-Bissaka added a second in the second half, handing Newcastle their second home defeat of the season.
Despite coming into the match on the back of three straight wins, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side were outplayed by West Ham, leaving the 52,000 fans at the stadium disappointed as they headed home. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Bowen highlighted the importance of controlling the crowd in such a hostile environment.
“I said we needed a performance before the game, and I think we delivered,” Bowen said. “Newcastle always score at home, so to keep them to a clean sheet and score two goals is a great achievement. It’s an atmosphere you have to control, and I think we did that perfectly.”

He added, “The desire and work rate from everyone were crucial. A clean sheet away at Newcastle is not easy. We have a massive game against Arsenal on Saturday, and we need to keep winning consistently. This win is a great start, and we can take a lot from it.”
Newcastle now face a quick turnaround, with just five days to recover before traveling to Crystal Palace, who secured a point at Villa Park over the weekend. Howe’s side finished the night in 10th place, having had the opportunity to move into third with a win.
