Son Heung-min has entered the final year of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur, sparking speculation about his future. Although many fans expected the club to offer the South Korean forward a contract extension, reports suggest that instead, Spurs have activated the one-year option in his current deal, extending his stay at the club until 2026.
Son has faced an injury-plagued start to the 2024/25 season, missing six matches across all competitions. However, his talent remains undeniable, as evidenced by his three goals and four assists in 12 appearances. A standout moment came when he set up James Maddison against Manchester City, which saw him level Darren Anderton at the top of Tottenham’s all-time Premier League assist chart.
Despite his continued importance to the team, Tottenham’s decision-makers are being cautious about offering the 32-year-old forward a long-term contract, especially considering he will turn 33 in July. Former Tottenham manager David Pleat believes that the end of the current season might be the right time for the club to part ways with Son.
Speaking on The Joy of Football podcast, Pleat said: “It will be fascinating to see what Tottenham decides to do with Son at the end of this season. There’s a lot of talk about him getting an extra year, but I wonder if it might be best for the club to maximize his value by agreeing a move to another club. That’s just my opinion.”
Despite the talk of decline due to his age, Son remains one of Tottenham’s most valuable players. If he were to leave as a free agent, it would be a significant blow for the club. There has been speculation about a potential move to Saudi Arabia, which could allow Tottenham to receive a transfer fee if his contract extension is triggered.
From a financial perspective, triggering the 12-month extension would allow the club to maintain Son’s value and avoid the risk of losing him for nothing, creating a win-win scenario.
