Noel Gallagher took a jibe at Tottenham, calling them “frauds” despite their impressive 4-0 victory over Manchester City on Saturday. James Maddison scored twice, while Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson also found the net, helping Spurs continue their strong record against the Premier League champions with a dominant win at the Etihad Stadium. This result marked Tottenham’s sixth victory in their last 13 encounters with Pep Guardiola’s City, a feat that few teams can match amid City’s dominance.
Gallagher, a lifelong Manchester City fan, admitted that facing Spurs in their current poor form was the last thing his team needed. City entered the match on the back of four consecutive defeats and a number of key injuries, so the visit of Ange Postecoglou’s side was hardly a welcome prospect for City supporters.
“The whole thing seems to have fallen off a cliff, but if we hadn’t won four league titles in a row, I’d be worried,” Gallagher said. “This is just a natural dip of maybe five or ten percent, and the last team we wanted to face after four straight losses was Tottenham at home.”
“They always seem to do it to us,” Gallagher continued. “They’re the biggest frauds in the football league. They’ll probably lose to Fulham next week, but they always turn up against us. I wasn’t expecting to win, but I definitely wasn’t expecting a 4-0 thrashing. That was a shocker.”
Reflecting on City’s recent struggles, Gallagher pointed out that last season’s loss to Aston Villa was more understandable, as they were beaten by the better team. But now, losing five games in a row to better teams has been tough to digest. Gallagher speculated about the atmosphere in the dressing room, saying, “Pep says one thing to the camera and something different to the players in the dressing room. I’d be very interested to see what the mood is like.”
Gallagher acknowledged that injuries and a loss of form were major challenges for City, but he also raised concerns over the team’s over-reliance on star striker Erling Haaland after the summer sale of Julian Alvarez. “To have Haaland as your only source of goals, you’re asking for trouble,” Gallagher said. “It’s hard to find a forward who’s willing to play second fiddle to Haaland. We’ve always had Alvarez, Mahrez, or Foden chipping in.”
Despite City’s struggles, Gallagher revealed that the mood at the Etihad remains positive. Although City are now eight points behind leaders Liverpool ahead of their trip to Anfield on Sunday, Gallagher noted that fans are still backing the team. “The mood in the stands is supportive,” he said. “We’ve just hit a wall, and the players will have to play through it. We’ve lost form, and the players who could replace the injured ones are also out. It’s one of those things, and we’ve got to suck it up and push through it.”
