Jamie Carragher believes Steve Cooper did a “great job” at Leicester City, despite inheriting a squad that wasn’t his own when he first arrived. Cooper’s tenure came to an end after the Foxes’ 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea last weekend, marking his departure after just four months in charge and only 12 Premier League matches. With Leicester sitting just one point above the relegation zone, the club is eager to appoint a new manager ahead of their upcoming match against Brentford.
David Moyes and Graham Potter are currently favorites in the betting odds to replace Cooper, although club sources have downplayed any interest in them. On Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher discussed Cooper’s time at Leicester. He acknowledged that while it was unclear what exactly the club expected from Cooper upon his appointment, the manager had a proven track record, particularly during his time at Nottingham Forest. Carragher pointed out that Cooper had to manage a difficult situation at Forest, with constant player turnover and a mix of nationalities, many of whom he might not have chosen. Despite these challenges, Carragher believes Cooper did an admirable job managing the club.
Carragher also speculated that some of the Leicester fans’ lack of connection to Cooper may have stemmed from his association with Nottingham Forest. He recalled how Forest fans had chanted Cooper’s name after a game, which he felt would not sit well with Leicester supporters.
Although Leicester’s loss to Chelsea was expected, Carragher felt the team could have been more competitive in the match. He agreed with Theo Walcott’s assessment that the decision to part ways with Cooper likely came after several disappointing results, with the club possibly waiting for one final game before making the change.
While neither Moyes nor Potter are believed to be strong contenders for the role, former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan have emerged as potential candidates to take over at Leicester.
