Michael Owen has reflected on his football career and the criticism he received, particularly from supporters of Liverpool and Newcastle United. Owen was at the peak of his career during his time at Liverpool, where he won the Ballon d’Or in 2001 at the age of 22. After scoring 158 goals in 297 appearances for The Reds, he left for Real Madrid.
However, his stint at the Spanish club lasted just one season, and Owen returned to the Premier League with Newcastle United. He has since revealed that he had hoped to return to Liverpool rather than move to Newcastle and even had a clause in his contract with the Magpies allowing him to rejoin the Merseyside club. Despite his desire, a return to Liverpool never happened, and his time at Newcastle was marred by injuries, ultimately culminating in the club’s relegation. When his contract with Newcastle ended, Owen became a free agent.
Surprisingly, he chose to join Liverpool’s bitter rivals, Manchester United. This move made him a disliked figure among both Newcastle and Liverpool fans, who regularly booed him when he played against their teams in the Premier League. Once a hero at Liverpool, Owen admitted he was no longer “loved” by the fans.
Looking back on his career, Owen shared his thoughts with The Telegraph: “The moment I chose to go to Real Madrid, I lost control of my career and the public’s perception of it. I don’t love going to Anfield now because I know I’m not loved there anymore. I tend to only go when I’m working. It’s not that I dread it, but for a long time, I used to feel uncomfortable driving back to the academy to see friends. I’ve since told myself, ‘I shouldn’t have been feeling that way.’
“People say it was because I signed for Manchester United, but the world knows there’s more to the story. There was already resentment when I played for Newcastle, even though I had a clause in my contract that allowed me to return to Liverpool every summer.”
He continued, “The Manchester United move made it easier for people to criticise me, but when I first came back to Anfield as a Newcastle player, I remember hundreds, maybe a thousand fans booing me. I can’t forget how I, my family, and former teammates felt. Everyone who truly understood the situation was disappointed on my behalf.”
Owen spent four seasons at Newcastle, scoring 30 goals in 79 appearances, before moving on to Manchester United, where he scored 17 goals in 52 games. He ended his playing career at Stoke City in 2013.
