Gary Neville has criticized Lucas Paquetá as “lazy” after the Brazilian midfielder conceded a penalty during West Ham United’s 5-2 loss to Arsenal.
The Gunners were already 2-0 up when Paquetá fouled Bukayo Saka in the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Martin Ødegaard calmly converted the spot-kick, putting Arsenal 3-0 ahead just 34 minutes into the match.
Neville did not hold back in his assessment of Paquetá’s poorly-timed challenge, telling Sky Sports [30 November, 18:03]: “Paquetá had a lazy, half-hearted attempt. He’s not quick enough to shift his feet, and that’s not what Julen Lopetegui or West Ham need right now.”
Neville added that the last thing Lopetegui needed was unnecessary penalties, given the mounting pressure on him. While the win over Newcastle eased some of that pressure, Neville described the first-half performance as unacceptable, despite a slight recovery later in the half. “I’ve got very little sympathy for players making that kind of challenge,” he said.
Though Paquetá’s penalty wasn’t the primary issue in West Ham’s performance, it certainly didn’t help. Arsenal ended the first half 5-2 ahead, following another penalty when Lukasz Fabianski fouled Gabriel while challenging for the ball, allowing Saka to convert again. This compounded Lopetegui’s difficulties as he faces increasing pressure to retain his job at the London Stadium.
