“Worse than Fabianski: Lopetegui told must axe 4/10 West Ham man after Arsenal
West Ham United suffered another heavy defeat, this time to Arsenal, in a chaotic 5-2 loss at the London Stadium.
The match started with Gabriel giving Mikel Arteta’s side the lead, heading in from a corner to beat Lukasz Fabianski. Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 27th minute, as Leandro Trossard finished off a brilliant team move set up by Bukayo Saka.
Martin Ødegaard then converted a penalty in the 34th minute, and Kai Havertz made it 4-0 just two minutes later, finishing confidently in a one-on-one situation. After dominating possession, Arsenal’s control began to slip, and West Ham managed to fight their way back into the game. Aaron Wan-Bissaka pulled one back with a lovely finish after a smart run, and Emerson Palmieri scored a thunderous free-kick that smashed against the crossbar and past David Raya, leaving the keeper helpless.
However, Arsenal restored their lead after Fabianski fouled Gabriel in the box, giving away another penalty, which Saka confidently converted to seal the points for the visitors. The second half was largely uneventful, with West Ham unable to mount a meaningful comeback and suffering another loss.
West Ham’s Worst Performers vs Arsenal
There were a few disappointing performances from West Ham players in the game. Fabianski, in particular, had a difficult outing against his former club. The Polish goalkeeper conceded five goals in just 40 minutes and was responsible for giving away a penalty. His statistics were grim—he conceded -1.99 goals and made just two saves from seven shots on target. Fabianski also completed only 55% of his passes, contributing to a poor showing.
Midfielder Tomas Soucek also had a tough game. Normally influential in the center of the park, the Czech international struggled to make an impact. Soucek had 45 touches but completed only 69% of his passes, losing the ball 11 times and failing to create a chance. However, he did win seven out of eight duels, showing effort off the ball.
Despite their struggles, the most disappointing player was likely centre-back Max Kilman.
Max Kilman’s Stats vs Arsenal
For a defender, it’s tough to shine when your team concedes five goals, and Saturday night was a tough one for Kilman. After a solid start to his West Ham career, the 27-year-old had a difficult time against Arsenal. Kilman was at fault for Havertz’s goal, as he failed to keep up with the German striker, who ran behind the defense and finished calmly. Kilman’s lack of organization at the back allowed Havertz to score, making it 4-0.
Kilman had 57 touches and completed 84% of his passes, but his defensive performance left much to be desired. He lost possession seven times and made one error that led to a goal. He also won just one of three aerial duels. With such a performance, it was no surprise that Claretandhugh, a West Ham insiders’ site, gave him a poor 4/10 player rating.
With a crucial match against Leicester City coming up, manager Julen Lopetegui may consider rotating Kilman out of the starting lineup. After conceding five goals, a defensive shake-up could be a wise move ahead of a game West Ham desperately needs to win.
