West Ham United suffered a second consecutive Premier League defeat, falling 3-1 to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium last night.
The match marked Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first win as Leicester manager, with goals from Jamie Vardy, Bilal El Khannouss, and Patson Daka securing all three points for the Foxes. Niclas Füllkrug netted a late goal for West Ham, but it was only a consolation.
The loss will intensify the pressure on West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui, who has now lost half of his Premier League matches in charge, failing to deliver the impact many had hoped for since his summer appointment. West Ham currently sit in 14th place, having suffered seven league defeats this season, with only Wolves and Southampton having lost more.
Lopetegui made several changes for the match, but none had a positive effect, contributing to another disappointing performance in the 2024/25 season.

Striker Danny Ings made his first league start of the season, but the 32-year-old squandered his opportunity, failing to make an impact. Ings played only the first half, touching the ball just 19 times and losing both of his ground duels. He also failed to get any of his shots on target, resulting in another frustrating night for the squad.
Konstantinos Mavropanos, who was recalled to the starting lineup, also struggled. Despite completing 60 passes, the Greek defender was part of a backline that conceded three or more goals for the sixth time in 14 matches. West Ham have now allowed 27 goals, the third most in the league.
A Key Player Who Might Cost Lopetegui His Job
West Ham’s defensive woes have been a major issue throughout the season, despite significant investment in the summer. Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo arrived to bolster the defense, but their presence hasn’t been enough to turn things around.
Vladimir Coufal, who has made over 150 appearances for the club since joining from Slavia Prague, was once again ineffective in the loss to Leicester. The Czech right-back played just over an hour before being substituted after Leicester’s second goal. He failed to make any key passes, complete any crosses, or record any interceptions, and lost 60% of his duels. His poor performance contributed to West Ham’s latest defeat, and he received a low 4/10 match rating from the Standard’s Dom Smith, the second-worst score for a West Ham player in the game.
With Lopetegui under increasing pressure and the team continuing to struggle, his job is now on the line. It remains to be seen whether he will remain in charge for Monday’s clash against his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers, which could potentially be the final blow to his tenure at West Ham.
