James Tarkowski believed he had doubled Everton’s lead at Goodison Park against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Everton had a goal controversially ruled out after James Tarkowski appeared to have given them a two-goal lead against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The centre-back headed in a Dwight McNeil free-kick just before the 20-minute mark, with his powerful back-post header beyond the reach of goalkeeper Jose Sa.
The goal sent Goodison Park into celebration, as the Blues seemed poised to ease the tension of the match, which would see the losing side drop into the Premier League’s bottom three. However, the joy quickly turned to frustration when VAR initiated a check for a possible offside. That frustration escalated into anger as boos filled the stadium when referee Michael Salisbury walked over to the pitch-side monitor.
While Tarkowski was onside, Orel Mangala was clearly offside, and the referee had to determine whether Mangala had interfered with play as Wolves attempted to deal with the cross. Salisbury ultimately sided with the visitors, disallowing the goal, a decision that sparked chants of “Premier League, corrupt as f***” from the home supporters.
The Premier League later clarified the decision: “Tarkowski’s goal was initially awarded on-field. VAR checked that Mangala was in an offside position and interfered with an opponent, recommending an on-field review. The referee overturned his original decision, and the goal was disallowed.”
Everton later made it 2-0 through Mangala after an Ashley Young free-kick broke the deadlock.
