Jarrod Bowen has openly discussed West Ham United’s ongoing struggles following their 3-1 loss to Leicester City on Tuesday evening.
With increasing pressure mounting on Julen Lopetegui, it wouldn’t be surprising if he were no longer in charge when West Ham face his former team, Wolverhampton Wanderers, next Monday. The Hammers then have challenging away fixtures against Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion before Christmas, and at the moment, they don’t seem likely to secure victories in these matches.
Chris Sutton believes Lopetegui should be sacked, stating that his appointment was never a good fit, especially after the club moved on from David Moyes.
However, Bowen also made comments regarding Leicester’s new manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, following the defeat on Tuesday.
Jarrod Bowen Admits West Ham Were ‘Soft’ in Their Loss to Leicester
In an interview with the club website, Bowen acknowledged that West Ham were aware Leicester would bring a boost of energy following Van Nistelrooy’s appointment—what is often referred to as a “new manager bounce.” Yet, from West Ham’s perspective, it is concerning that their defense was still so “soft,” as they failed to match Leicester in any area of the game.
Reflecting on the defeat, Bowen said: “You have to be clinical in this league, or you get punished. The goals we conceded were soft, and if you don’t keep the ball out of your net and don’t take your chances, it becomes even harder. We had plenty of opportunities that we didn’t take, and I think the first goal was avoidable. We knew it would be a fast start for them with a new manager, and they’d bring a lot of energy.
“What’s most disappointing for us is conceding so early. We created plenty of chances, but we didn’t convert them, and that’s the most disappointing thing of the night.”
Bowen continued, acknowledging the pressure on both the players and Lopetegui: “We’re the ones who have to go out there and perform, and we haven’t done that to the level we know we’re capable of. We need to turn it around because we’re all in this together as a group. It’s down to us to perform better and do more than we’ve been doing.”

Van Nistelrooy praised some of his Leicester players after their win, highlighting the team’s spirit—something Lopetegui has struggled to instill in his West Ham squad. As calls for change grow, one manager has reportedly shown interest in taking the West Ham job, suggesting that club owner David Sullivan may soon make the decision to dismiss Lopetegui. The Hammers have regressed since the days of David Moyes, and while it was always going to be a tough task for Lopetegui to make an immediate impact, there is little evidence of a clear long-term vision under his leadership.
