Former Liverpool player Neil Mellor has warned the Reds that the atmosphere at Goodison Park will be more challenging on Saturday than what they experienced at St. James’ Park. He believes that Arne Slot’s side will need to replicate their performance at Old Trafford earlier this season to succeed.
On Wednesday, Liverpool played out a 3-3 draw against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, coming from behind twice to level the score. Now, they face their Merseyside rivals Everton at Goodison Park, a venue where they have failed to win in their last two visits.
Saturday’s match will be the final league encounter at Goodison Park before Everton moves to Bramley-Moore Dock next season, and Mellor feels the atmosphere will be even more intense than the one Liverpool encountered at St. James’ Park. He expects the Everton fans to make life as difficult as possible for the Reds, but he also believes Liverpool will have the upper hand, as the Toffees are not accustomed to playing midweek matches.
Mellor urged Liverpool to repeat their strong performance at Old Trafford in September, when they silenced the home crowd with a commanding display.
“I think tonight was tough with the atmosphere, but Saturday will be even tougher,” Mellor said on LFC TV’s reaction show. “The lads have mentioned this is our last ever league game at Goodison, and they don’t like us. To experience it was horrible.
“They will do everything to make it uncomfortable for Liverpool. The game comes less than 72 hours after this one, and Everton aren’t used to playing twice a week.
“Our advantage is that we’ve already been in a similar atmosphere at Old Trafford this season and we quietened them down quickly. They hated that performance. If we can do the same again, we can enjoy it.”
Liverpool have been in outstanding form this season, and it remains to be seen if Sean Dyche can devise a plan to stop the Reds’ impressive 17-game unbeaten run across all competitions on Saturday.
