Liverpool’s Premier League-leading Merseyside derby against Everton, scheduled for Saturday, was postponed due to severe weather conditions brought on by Storm Darragh. High winds and heavy rain have caused significant disruption across the western parts of the United Kingdom, including travel delays. In a statement, Everton confirmed that the match was postponed for safety reasons following discussions between the two clubs, local authorities, and Liverpool City Council.
Everton expressed understanding of the disappointment this caused for fans, emphasizing that the safety of supporters, staff, and players is the top priority.
This derby was set to be the last one held at Everton’s historic Goodison Park, which has been the club’s home since 1892, before they move to a new 53,000-seat stadium next season.
Liverpool currently lead the Premier League with a seven-point advantage after 14 games in the 38-match season.
Meanwhile, Championship matches in Plymouth and Cardiff were also called off on Friday due to a rare red weather warning issued by the MET Office for southwest England and Wales.
