Controversial: Paul Merson Drops Crystal Palace Relegation Verdict
Crystal Palace will travel to the south coast on Sunday afternoon to face rivals Brighton, and pundit Paul Merson has expressed his belief that the Eagles will avoid relegation this season, ahead of the crucial encounter at the Amex.
Oliver Glasner’s side has had a difficult start to the season, earning just 13 points from their first 15 Premier League matches. They currently sit four points above the relegation zone, though their form has improved since late October.
With only one defeat in their last ten games, Palace appear to be heading in the right direction, and reports suggesting that Glasner could be sacked in October have quieted recently. Merson is confident that this positive trend will continue and that the team will maintain their Premier League status this season.
Merson: Palace Will Stay Up After taking over from Roy Hodgson earlier this year, Glasner helped stabilize a struggling Palace team, leading them to a strong finish last season. This sparked hopes that the Eagles could challenge for a European spot this term, but with only two league wins so far, that ambition seems unlikely.
Nonetheless, things are looking brighter in South London, with a commendable 2-2 draw against Manchester City last week, leaving Glasner’s side with just one defeat in their last ten matches. In his Premier League predictions for Sportskeeda, Merson shared his belief that while Palace may lose to Brighton, they will avoid relegation:
“Crystal Palace looked good in their 2-2 draw with Manchester City. They are showing signs of improvement, with just one loss in their last eight games.
“Although Brighton is at home, I expect Palace to put up a strong fight. I believe they will avoid relegation by the end of the season. From what I saw in their match against City, I think they’ll be safe.”
Following the Brighton match, Palace will face a tough challenge against Arsenal, with a midweek trip to the Emirates for the EFL Cup before hosting the Gunners next weekend.
