Along with the praise, there’s still an element of surprise in the media over just how well Forest are playing. Gary Lineker, who predicted Forest would be relegated, has been ridiculed for his forecast, while the quality of football the squad is producing has taken many by surprise.
Whether dominating possession or exploiting counter-attacks, Forest’s coaching staff has implemented a tactical approach that other Premier League teams are struggling to cope with.
Next up is Aston Villa, with pundit Chris Sutton expressing confidence in Forest’s ability to get a result in the upcoming match. In his weekly predictions for the BBC, Sutton admitted that he has a hard time not backing Forest, whether at home or away.
Sutton said: “I usually back Nottingham Forest when they’re at home, but they seem just as strong on the road now, perhaps because they thrive on counter-attacking football. I don’t think they’ll lose this one, but I’m hesitant to bet against Villa, so a draw seems like the most likely outcome.” Sutton predicted a 1-1 draw, which would keep Forest in 5th place in the league.
Sutton’s remarks about Forest’s strong away form are particularly notable, given their previous struggles on the road under former manager Steve Cooper.
Under Cooper, Forest had significant difficulties away from home in the Premier League. Before his departure from Leicester City, Cooper had won at just four Premier League stadiums during his tenure, with ten of his 14 victories coming at home, and only two away wins in charge of Forest.
In stark contrast, Forest have already doubled their away win total this season, securing four victories, including impressive wins at Liverpool and Manchester United. This dramatic improvement under Espirito Santo has clearly impressed Sutton, to the point where he is now confident in backing Forest on their travels.
