Wolves striker Matheus Cunha could be facing an FA investigation after an incident following their 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon. The dramatic defeat, which saw Ipswich score in the final minute through Jack Taylor, deepened Wolves’ woes, leaving them still in the relegation zone and four points adrift of safety.
Tempers flared after the final whistle, with Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri being sent off and held back by his teammate Craig Dawson. Cunha was also involved in an altercation on the pitch, where he appeared to collide with a member of Ipswich’s security team and then seemingly snatch glasses off the individual’s face. Images of the incident quickly spread on social media.
Mirror Football understands that the FA is waiting to see if referee Simon Hooper includes the incident in his match report before deciding whether to launch an investigation. Former Premier League referee Mike Dean believes Cunha could face trouble, saying: “I watched the footage back and Cunha elbows one of the Ipswich coaches in the back of the head. Then he pulls off the coach’s glasses and throws them on the pitch. I think he’ll be in trouble with the FA.”
After the match, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil was asked about Ait-Nouri’s red card. The left-back received a second yellow card and will miss Wolves’ next match against Leicester City. O’Neil expressed frustration, saying, “I haven’t seen the incident yet, but I’ve been told he got a second yellow. We are under a lot of pressure, and we need to push the group beyond our limits. We can’t afford to get into trouble like this. Rayan’s a key player, and now we’re without him. I’ll address it internally.”
O’Neil also acknowledged the emotional nature of the game, adding, “I understand the players’ emotions, but we need to maintain control. For two players to be out of position during a corner, in the last seconds at home to Ipswich, shows a lack of clear thinking in those crucial moments.”
