Newcastle United bounced back from their draw with Brentford in perfect fashion, securing a 4-2 victory over Leicester City at St James’ Park. Alan Shearer described the performance as ‘dominant,’ as the Magpies ended a four-match winless streak. Jacob Murphy’s first-half goal put Eddie Howe’s side ahead, and three more goals in the second half sealed the 4-0 win.
After the match, Shearer, who had criticized Newcastle’s performance following their defeat to Brentford last weekend, took to X to praise Howe and his team, writing: “That’s better. Dominated the whole game.”
Although the win only marks their third victory in 12 Premier League matches, it should boost confidence ahead of their Carabao Cup Quarter-Final against Brentford on Wednesday. Newcastle will then travel to Ipswich Town next weekend, but they will be without Joelinton. The Brazilian received his fifth Premier League yellow card for a foul on James Justin in the second half, meaning he will be suspended for the Ipswich match, though he can play in the Carabao Cup.
Sean Longstaff, a second-half substitute against Leicester, will also miss the Brentford game but will be available for the Ipswich match. Longstaff is expected to replace Joelinton in the starting lineup for the trip to Portman Road.
