Tottenham transfer news: Richarlison ‘makes January exit decision’ amid links with former club
Tottenham Hotspur striker Richarlison is reportedly keen to remain in North London next year, despite interest from his former club, Fluminense.
The 27-year-old has struggled to meet expectations since his £50m move from Everton to Tottenham in 2022, with the fee potentially rising to £60m based on performance-related add-ons. In 73 appearances across all competitions for Spurs, Richarlison has scored just 16 goals and provided nine assists. Persistent injuries have hindered his progress under Ange Postecoglou.
This season, Richarlison has featured in only seven matches, scoring once and assisting once, and is expected to be sidelined until the New Year due to a hamstring injury. His last appearance for Spurs was in early November, during their 4-1 victory over Aston Villa. With three years remaining on his contract, it seems unlikely that Tottenham will push for an extension in the near future.
Richarlison reportedly set to reject Fluminense return
Following the summer arrival of Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, there were speculations that Richarlison might leave Tottenham, with Saudi Arabian clubs linked to a potential move. However, he remained in North London after the summer transfer window closed.
Now, his former club Fluminense, where he played from 2016 to 2017, is said to be interested in re-signing him. However, according to TNT Sports Brasil, Richarlison is set to decline a reunion with the Brazilian club. The report suggests that Tottenham have no plans to loan out the striker for the second half of the 2024-25 season, and Richarlison himself is eager to stay as he prepares for fatherhood.
Fluminense reportedly views Richarlison as a key player for their Club World Cup campaign, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan HD, and Mamelodi Sundowns in the USA. However, their hopes of bringing him back are likely to be dashed for now, as Richarlison remains focused on revitalizing his career at Spurs once he overcomes his injury problems.
Could other Spurs players leave in January?
While Richarlison plans to stay at Spurs in 2025, Tottenham may be more inclined to accept offers for Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilon, who has been largely excluded from Postecoglou’s squad this season. Although recent defensive injuries have seen him included on the bench for Tottenham’s last three Premier League matches, Reguilon has not played a single minute in the 2024-25 season. With his contract expiring in the summer of 2025, the winter transfer window could represent Tottenham’s last opportunity to sell him for a fee.
Tottenham will look to end a five-match winless run in all competitions when they face Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday evening.
