“I’m in a good place” – Player Reflects on His Career and Regrets Not Being More Patient, Including His Time at Nottingham Forest
Former Nottingham Forest talent Oliver Burke has admitted to looking back on parts of his career with regret, acknowledging that he could have been more patient in certain situations.
Speaking to Kicker about his career and his time at Werder Bremen, where things are finally starting to click for the winger, Burke reflected on his journey. He was once hailed as one of the rising stars of European football after his breakthrough at Nottingham Forest, which led to a €15.2m move to RB Leipzig in August 2016.
However, Burke struggled to settle after that, moving to West Bromwich Albion for the same fee a year later before stints at Celtic and Alaves. In September 2020, he joined Sheffield United for €6.5m, followed by a loan at Millwall, and eventually joined Werder Bremen on a free transfer in 2022.
His time at Werder started off rocky, leading to a loan move to Birmingham before returning to Bremen this year, where he’s once again found himself on the fringes. He has made nine appearances in all competitions, totaling 97 minutes, but recent weeks have seen him playing in the role originally intended for him, according to Kicker. The 27-year-old has shown signs of the potential he displayed when he first broke through at Forest.
Now, Burke is reflecting on his past decisions and admits that a bit more patience could have made a difference, starting with his departure from Nottingham Forest.
“My situation wasn’t the easiest. Focus is something I’ve definitely improved on,” he said. “Sometimes I look back and think: Maybe I should have been more patient. Maybe I expected too much – wanted more. But I don’t want to dwell on it too much. That’s my journey, and that’s how it went.”
He added, “I’m focused on the present now: I’m in a good place and enjoying my football here. This summer, I felt I could prove myself again. Werder is the right club for me, and I believe it can work here.”
