Newcastle United secured a commanding 3-1 victory over Brentford at St. James’ Park in the EFL Cup quarter-finals, booking their spot in the final four.
The Magpies took an early lead thanks to Sandro Tonali, who unleashed a powerful shot from distance to open the scoring. The Italian midfielder is thriving in his deeper role, allowing Bruno Guimaraes and either Joelinton or Joe Willock to push forward.
Tonali doubled his tally before halftime, volleying in a corner to give Newcastle a comfortable two-goal cushion.
Fabian Schar sealed the win with a third goal, though Brentford fought back late in the game after Yoane Wissa came off the bench to score. Despite Brentford’s late goal, Newcastle could have easily won by a much bigger margin.
Although the victory marked another emphatic performance for Newcastle, manager Eddie Howe expressed frustration over one aspect of the game. He commented (via the BBC): “I’m disappointed with the bookings and losing two key players in Bruno and Fabian for the semi-final, but that’s part of the territory. We are competitive and encourage intensity, so you can’t have everything.”
Both Guimaraes and Schar will miss the semi-final, leaving Newcastle potentially vulnerable when they face either Arsenal, Liverpool, or Tottenham Hotspur/Manchester United.
Guimaraes, a dominant force in midfield, was crucial in the win over Brentford, winning five of nine ground duels, providing two key passes, and recording an assist. His form continues to be strong, having scored against Leicester City over the weekend.
Schar, a mainstay in the defense, will also be a significant loss for the Magpies. In addition to his solid defensive contributions, Schar is capable of scoring, making him a favorite of Howe.
Having lost in the 2022/23 final, Newcastle will feel they have unfinished business in the EFL Cup. Howe and his team will be eager to secure the club’s first trophy in nearly 69 years, but they must first navigate the semi-finals and potentially the final.
