A determined Thomas Frank insisted that Brentford “were on top” against Nottingham Forest, but ultimately saw their unbeaten home record slip away after failing to convert the “chance after chance” they created at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Goals from Ola Aina and Anthony Elanga in each half secured a 2-0 victory for Forest, marking their third consecutive league win as they continue their remarkable transformation from relegation candidates last season to European hopefuls this term.
The defeat also ended Brentford’s impressive run of seven wins from their last eight home matches, with Forest becoming the first team to leave west London with a clean sheet.
While Frank acknowledged that Forest defended well, he was not willing to concede that the better team had won. Speaking to the Brentford club website, he said: “We played a game where, in key moments, we dominated and were on top. We lacked the cutting edge to take all the chances we created, but I felt we did enough to score at least one goal.”
“Nottingham Forest defended well at times—they also played a 5-4-1 formation, which was the first time they’ve done that this season, even after facing top teams like Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal, where they used a four-man defense. That’s a big credit to what we’ve done.”
“Of course, we need to learn from that and figure out how to handle it better in the future. I still believe we did enough that, on another day, we could have played the same match and gotten a different result.”
This victory marked Forest’s seventh win in their last ten league matches, adding to their notable triumphs at Old Trafford and Anfield, while also earning a point at Stamford Bridge. Next, they will face Tottenham at home on Boxing Day (3pm).
Frank concluded: “It’s a results business, and it’s definitely more enjoyable to win. Our performance was good, and I think we were on top against the team that’s third in the table. We lacked a cutting edge offensively, but we created dangerous situations. We didn’t give much away, and in that sense, we were very good, but Nottingham defended very well.”
