Tottenham were thoroughly outclassed by Liverpool at home on Sunday, conceding three goals in the first half and failing to recover. Ange Postecoglou’s injury-ravaged defense struggled to cope with Liverpool’s attacking power.
Liverpool took the lead early when a perfectly placed Trent Alexander-Arnold cross found an unmarked Luis Diaz, who headed in. Fraser Forster, the Tottenham goalkeeper, reacted slowly to a clearance that bounced back into the air, allowing the 5ft7” Alexis Mac-Allister to rise above defenders and score.
Tottenham briefly responded through James Maddison, whose excellent finish gave Spurs hope, but Liverpool quickly regained their advantage with Dominik Szoboszlai slotting past Forster just moments later. The deficit grew to three goals early in the second half when Mo Salah tapped in after two goal-line clearances failed to stop him.
Liverpool’s dominance continued with a fifth goal after the hour mark, as Szoboszlai combined brilliantly to beat an exposed Spurs defense. Tottenham managed a consolation goal in the 72nd minute when Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke linked up, with Kulusevski finishing with a volley. Solanke added another late on after a cross from substitute Brennan Johnson.
Luis Diaz sealed the win for Liverpool with a well-taken goal in the 85th minute, leaving Spurs to reflect on a defensive nightmare and a questionable game plan given their depleted resources at the back. Here’s how the players rated in the 6-3 defeat.
Fraser Forster – 3
Made a good save early to deny Salah, but was slow to react to the second and third goals. Forster often seems unsure of when to come off his line, and his indecision led to critical mistakes. Spurs may need to look for a new backup goalkeeper in January.
Pedro Porro – 3
Caught out of position multiple times, most notably during the fourth goal, which came down his unguarded side. His positioning left much to be desired.
Radu Dragusin – 2
Lost track of Luis Diaz for the opener, and failed to defend properly for the third goal. His inability to step up when needed or track back cost Spurs dearly. While exposed, Dragusin’s lack of awareness was evident, and Postecoglou’s planning should have mitigated this vulnerability.
Archie Gray – 3
It’s tough to criticize such a young player, especially playing out of position against top-tier opponents. However, Gray wasn’t dominant enough and struggled when defending against Liverpool’s quality, as seen during the fifth and sixth goals.
Djed Spence – 4
Could have done more to challenge for the second goal and was caught out frequently, like Porro. The game plan, which featured two high full-backs, left the defense exposed and vulnerable.
Pape Sarr (Off at 57’) – 5
Sarr was one of the less culpable players but was still part of a midfield that struggled to cope with Liverpool’s dominance. His substitution at 57 minutes was necessary given the circumstances.
