Everton frustrated yet another Premier League title contender this weekend as Chelsea became the latest team to fail to score against Sean Dyche’s resolute side. Defenders Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitaliy Mykolenko were also standout performers. Mykolenko was active throughout, winning seven duels, while Branthwaite had a perfect record in his duels, alongside four tackles.
Although Dyche’s team left the pitch content with the 0-0 draw, Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s frustration continued as he failed to score yet again.
Calvert-Lewin’s Struggles
Calvert-Lewin has not scored in the Premier League since mid-September, and his performance this season has been a continuation of a gradual decline, largely due to ongoing injury problems. Despite being relatively injury-free now, the 27-year-old striker appears to be lacking confidence.
Against Chelsea, Calvert-Lewin had a quiet game, failing to register a single shot and was substituted in the 73rd minute. His numbers were concerning: he completed just seven accurate passes from 24 touches—fewer than Pickford’s 45—and won only two of his 11 duels, losing 81% of them.
Dyche may consider dropping Calvert-Lewin for Everton’s upcoming trip to Manchester City on Boxing Day, with Beto potentially taking over as the lone striker. This change could catch a struggling Manchester City off-guard, with Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Wheelock awarding Calvert-Lewin a lackluster 6/10 rating, noting that he had “no chance” of ending his goal drought in this match.
Calvert-Lewin has been a key figure for Everton when fit, but Dyche may need to explore other options going forward if the striker’s form doesn’t improve, potentially leading to more time on the bench for the 27-year-old.
