Enzo Maresca explained why he was “absolutely happy” with Chelsea’s 0-0 draw against Everton on Sunday, despite the missed opportunity to move above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
The Blues fought hard to maintain a draw at Goodison Park, with Chelsea creating the better chances in the first half. However, in the second half, they had to rely on goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who made several crucial saves to deny Everton. The result left Chelsea unable to temporarily overtake Liverpool, but Maresca focused on the positives.
“I’m absolutely happy,” Maresca said. “I told the players I’m happier today than after the Brentford win. I was concerned about this game—it was tricky with a difficult stadium and a tough opponent.”
Although Everton are fighting relegation, Sean Dyche’s side has proved resilient defensively, with Sunday’s clean sheet giving them a league-high seven so far this season.
“They are defensively excellent,” Maresca continued. “One of the top five teams in Europe in terms of clean sheets. It’s difficult to create chances against them, and this wasn’t an easy game. You have to adjust to different styles—long balls, second balls, set pieces. Football isn’t just about what we do with the ball, but also how we defend.”
Maresca admitted that he would have been even happier had Nicolas Jackson converted one of his two first-half chances. Jackson’s missed opportunities meant Chelsea remained four points behind Liverpool, who had a commanding win against Tottenham on Sunday.
