Newcastle United are focused on securing new contracts for several key players in the upcoming weeks and months.
Both Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff recently reached 200 appearances for the club, but their current contracts are set to expire in the summer. Schar has expressed his desire to remain at Newcastle, and head coach Eddie Howe is eager to retain the 33-year-old defender.
Longstaff’s situation is a bit different, as the club has the option to extend his contract until June 2026. According to Mail Online, that extension has already been triggered, although Howe has refrained from providing an official update.
“We’ll give you news on those things as and when things happen,” Howe told The Gazette. “We’ve got important players out of contract, and we want to tie them down to new deals. We’ll announce updates when we have them.”
By triggering Longstaff’s contract extension ahead of the January transfer window, Newcastle ensures they won’t risk losing an academy graduate for a low fee or for free in the summer. Players in the final six months of their contracts can negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs to join on a free transfer.
Longstaff has been linked with clubs like Leicester City and Leeds United in the past. While Howe doesn’t want to lose any players in January, financial pressures and the temptation to sell academy products for profit mean the club must take any interest seriously.
Valued at approximately £15 million, Longstaff hasn’t started any of Newcastle’s last six matches, with the midfield partnership of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes currently thriving.
“Of course, I’m speaking on behalf of the club, but players also have their own wants and needs, which we respect and understand. It’s a short career, and players need to be happy in their environment,” Howe explained. “They need to be confident that we’re providing the right support for their careers and meeting their needs.”
“It’s always a two-way relationship, and we’ve got a fantastic group of professionals here. I can’t speak highly enough of everyone at the club right now,” Howe added. “But of course, we’ll continue to speak with players individually to find the right solutions.”
