Just In: Chris Sutton makes major Wolves vs Man Utd scoreline prediction as ‘tight’ match has one outcome ‘written all over it’
BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton sees no reason why his prediction for the Wolves vs Manchester United match won’t be the eventual outcome.
Manchester United endured another disappointing setback in their lackluster 2024-25 Premier League campaign, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford. Once again, the Red Devils showed weaknesses from set pieces, and Ruben Amorim’s side was outclassed by Bournemouth on Sunday.
Since taking over at Old Trafford from Sporting CP in November, Ruben Amorim has secured only two Premier League wins out of six matches. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager has also overseen three defeats and one draw, facing a difficult challenge to turn United’s fortunes around.
United now sit far behind in the Premier League table, nine points off the top four after 17 matches. Their form and consistency have been inconsistent throughout the season, making it tough for Amorim to mount a challenge for a top-four spot and secure Champions League football next season.
Chris Sutton shared his blunt thoughts on United’s performance against Bournemouth in his BBC Sport column: “I usually get some feedback on social media when I predict a Manchester United defeat, but it’s been quiet since I said they would lose to Bournemouth on Sunday,” he wrote. “I didn’t expect a 3-0 scoreline, but I backed Bournemouth because they won at Old Trafford last season, and since then, they’ve improved while United have regressed. Was it really such a surprise?”
Sutton continued with the same mindset for the upcoming match: “Why would anyone back Ruben Amorim’s side to beat Wolves? I can’t think of any compelling reason why anything will be different.”
As United prepare for their Boxing Day clash with Wolves at Molineux, Sutton anticipates a tight match with a likely 1-1 draw. Kick-off is set for 5:30pm UK time.
Wolves, who recently sacked Gary O’Neil as head coach following a poor run of form, have appointed Vitor Pereira, the former Porto and Fenerbahce boss, to lead them out of the relegation zone. Sutton believes United’s clash with Wolves is poised for a draw, despite the challenges both teams face.
“I feel sorry for Amorim,” Sutton said. “He arrived with so much excitement around his appointment, but only a few weeks later, he must realize how big a task he has to turn things around. United have spent a fortune on this squad, and as Amorim has said, he’s still trying to find his best XI. It’s a trial period for him, but he also has to deal with issues like Marcus Rashford’s future. He’s got a lot to sort out.”
Sutton added that while Wolves’ 1-0 victory over Leicester under Pereira showed promise, the Foxes are not a top-tier side, so it’s difficult to gauge Wolves’ true form. Despite United’s poor performances, Sutton doesn’t expect Wolves to secure a win. He predicts a tight, drawn game.
