‘I stayed there for 12 years’ – Nottingham Forest star Ola Aina opens up on why he left Chelsea
Nottingham Forest fullback Ola Aina has revealed that his decision to leave Chelsea was motivated by a desire to advance his career.
The Nigerian international spent twelve years at Chelsea, progressing through the youth ranks and making his professional debut in a Carabao Cup match against Bristol Rovers in August 2016 under manager Antonio Conte.
Aina was a key figure in the Chelsea youth team that secured two UEFA Youth League titles in 2015 and 2016 and reached consecutive FA Youth Cup finals against Fulham and Manchester City.
In total, Aina made six appearances for the Chelsea first team before completing a permanent move to Italian Serie A side Torino in the summer of 2019.
While Aina emphasized that he never faced racial abuse during his four years in Italy, he did mention missing his family, especially since he only had one day off each week.
Speaking to Layo’s Choice, Aina said, “When the opportunity to move came up, I was a bit hesitant, but I had always wanted to play in Italy. It’s one of those countries I’ve always wanted to experience, so it made sense.”
Reflecting on his time at Torino, Aina shared, “In my first year, I was getting only one day off, so I would fly directly back to London for just one day. I did that for the whole season because I’m so close to my family. It was an experience I’ll never regret.”
Aina added, “During my four years there, I never received any racist comments or hate. People around me did, but by God’s grace, I never faced anything myself.”
Over his nine-year career, Aina has played for five clubs, including Chelsea, Hull City, Torino, Fulham, and Nottingham Forest.
“It’s the life of a footballer,” Aina reflected. “I was at Chelsea from the age of 10 or 11, staying there for 12 years. At some point in your career, you want to challenge yourself, which is why I moved to Italy to develop my skills. It was a valuable experience.”
Although Aina enjoys playing abroad, he noted, “I prefer being back home because it’s closer to my family and friends, and it’s easier to stay connected with people.”
Aina is currently enjoying one of his best seasons, with two goals in 17 Premier League appearances.
